Another one of my favorite year-end compilations are the Bootie “Best of” Mash-ups. These releases usually can standalone as a workout mix. The 2009 edition was released around the holidays and are still burning up my headphones. Checkout and download the album here.
Two of my favorite tracks are the Boston/Black Eyed Peas mix and the Kings of Leon/4 Tops mix. If I were a Spin instructor, I would definitely insert the Boston/BEP song somewhere into the spinning playlist to give the workout that extra “ooomph”
Toward the end of every year, music blog Stereogum and Team9 puts out a mash-up album called MySplice. Its usually remix of more popular songs with some of the year’s favorite Indie hits. The recent album was recently released (for FREE!) and the highlight for me has to be the mix of U2′s “With or Without You” with the ubiquitous “Love Story” by Taylor Swift. I thought the two individual songs were alright but somehow, the combination of the two really really fit. This won’t be the song that carries you to a 5K PR but might be suitable for your yoga, pilates or cool down playlists. Check out the song below along with the rest of the album you can stream.
This must be a great week for Lady Gaga remixes for the new workout playlist. I came across this one combining “Bad Romance” with the Human League song “Don’t You Want Me Baby” Think 80′s synths/new wave meets Lady Gaga electro-pop. The mix was done by a DJ known as A+D. For those throwing New Year’s parties, this song wouldn’t be out of place to get the dance floor going!
I always thought that the song Alejandro off of Lady Gaga’s Fame Monster album sounded A LOT like a tune Ace of Base would put out. I then found this mash-up of the song with Don’t Turn Around and it validates my thoughts. For those of you with a Lady Gaga workout playlist, definitely add this one.
The last couple of years, DJ Earworm puts out a compilation/mash-up of the year’s prior hits. The lastest edition for 2009 came out recently and I LOVE it. The songs that are included:

This will definitely be the lead track on my new workout playlist for 2010. There’s also a pretty sick video that was made. Check it all out below.
I’ve been on a mash ups kick again recently, especially after basically just playing mash ups at the I <3 Solos and Ugly Polos party on Saturday. I came across this very cool one with an AM radio/vinyl feel to it. Not sure who it was so I can give credit but the DJ cleverly manipulated and inserted Beyonce’s vocals for Single Ladies into Duke Ellington’s classic ‘Harlem Air Shaft’
I feel like folks love to remix Jay-Z into mash-ups because his flow goes so easily with any type of beat. I came across this fantastic mix from Mick Boogie that combines Hova’s rhymes and Marvin Gaye’s legendary songs. You can grab it at this website. Check out my favorite song so far posted below.
For those that have known me awhile, you know that mash-ups are a big guilty pleasure of mine. Sometime last year, a DJ named Minty Fresh Beats/Max Tannone released a mash-up album of Radiohead and Jay-Z songs. One of the biggest modern rock bands of our era and one of the most established MCs of our era interlaced together in perfect harmony. A follow-up EP of sorts “The Encore” was recently released. Check it out here and listen to this mash-up of Song Cry/High and Dry.
